Event keeps marriages on the Rock

As furor continues to surround the redefinition of marriage debate, Christian organizations are banding together to promote healthy marital relationships.

"Marriage on the Rock" is a new initiative set for February 15 or the preceding week (coinciding with Valentine's Day) and coordinated by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), Crossroads Christian Communications, Focus on the Family, MarriageCanada.ca, Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC).

The theme is based on the idea that Jesus is the rock or foundation upon which a marriage is built.

"We felt that in the midst of all of the legal developments surrounding the redefinition of marriage that we needed to call our affiliate congregations together to encourage them," says Linda Milke, director of ministry advancement for the EFC. "We pray that this may strengthen marriages that are struggling."

Express commitment

Al Saunders, national coordinator of adult ministry for the PAOC, says the event is also a way of expressing a recommitment to the biblical teachings on marriage that most churches adhere to.

"There has been a lot of screaming and shouting from evangelicals about the redefinition of marriage or gay marriages," says Saunders. "We've done surveys and polls and I've travelled across Canada-churches affirm marriages, but there are not a lot of healthy ones."

"Marriage on the Rock" materials include a kit designed to help churches coordinate activities and provide resources to cultivate healthy marital relationships. The kit contains tools such as Bible study materials, pre-marital counselling instruction and renewal of vows information. An estimated 3,500 CDs will be produced and distributed to churches for the event.

Kits may be ordered by calling 519-842-2797 or online at www.christianity.ca
