Toronto Mass Choir approaches silver anniversary

TORONTO, ON—Toronto Mass Choir kicks off its 25th season this November with a new commemorative CD looking back at their music over the years. It includes some previously unreleased recordings from the choir's first year.

Karen Burke has been director of Toronto Mass Choir since its inception in 1988.

"We have some members who have been there since the beginning," she says, along with "new members and everybody in between. It's wonderful that we've been able to both retain the old and welcome in the new, in this great ebb and flow."

Known as the oldest contemporary gospel choir in Canada, the award winning group has travelled the world, bringing their special mixture of Caribbean and gospel music. The choir is interdenominational and Burke adds it's where several church music directors had their start. The year-long celebration begins with a concert on November 3 and culminates with its 25th anniversary in October 2013. They will also be recording a new live DVD.

"It's quite an accomplishment," Burke says. "The only way you're able to do anything like it is with the joy of the Lord as your strength."
