Scripture resources sent to fire-stricken western Canada

Canadian Bible Society 'brings comfort' through God's Word

TORONTO, ON—The Canadian Bible Society (CBS) is distributing disaster relief resources to fire-stricken provinces in Western Canada.

British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan have been devastated by forest fires this summer. As of July 15, 2015, almost two million hectares of forest has been burned in Western Canada alone, over half of the total area burned occurring in Saskatchewan, according to Natural Resources Canada.

Thousands have been evacuated from their homes from blazes experts say may not be fully contained until the arrival of winter snow, still months away.

New fires continue to ignite daily, with troops, firefighters and volunteers fighting the flames and helping beleaguered citizens escape the chaos until fires are contained and evacuation orders lifted.

When Canadians face difficult times like this, “We know that God’s Word brings comfort to those who are suffering,” says Don Miller, Director of Canadian Ministry for the CBS.

That is why Bibles, New Testaments with Psalms and Proverbs and Words of Comfort, a booklet designed especially for times of disaster, are on their way to help provide spiritual solace as forest fires continue to rage.

Some have lost their homes, and others—including children, seniors and those suffering with pre-existing respiratory illnesses—face health complications from poor air quality as smoke continues to blanket parts of Western Canada.

“The Canadian Bible Society is standing with our sisters and brothers in our own country who are facing such a terrible time right now. Our hearts and prayers are with them,” says Miller.
