Praying for marriage verdict

U.S Supreme Court hearing oral arguments on the definition of marriage.

As the Supreme Court in the U.S hears arguments concerning individual state’s power to define marriage between one man and one woman, Christians are praying.

On April 28th a national call to prayer with the hashtag #PrayForMarriage went out, though writing at patheos.com, Samuel James, a communications specialist for the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, says the movement is less about praying for a legal victory than for cultural renewal.

“It’s about the need for children to be born into a society that values them enough to give them a mother and a father,” he says.

Regardless of the court’s decision, which is expected to be handed down in June, our prayers aren’t a “hand-wringing exercise,” he says. Our hope for marriage for future generations isn’t dependent on the consensus of nine people, “It’s not man-made and therefore cannot be man-unmade,” James says.

Some are saying the decision is a historical moment and will dictate the cultural debate on the definition of marriage in America for the coming decade.
