Pope Francis’ meeting with Canada’s indigenous to focus on elderly, environment

Stories We're Following: From Religion News Service

The Pope will be on his way to Canada this weekend for a six-day visit that he has described as a "penitential pilgrimage."

The visit follows a week-long delegation of Indigenous people from Canada to the Vatican in April, and is expected to include further discussion and apology for the Catholic Church's role in persecuting Indigenous communities and mistreatment of Indigenous children. He will also be speaking publicly after a mass at Commonwealth Stadium, on the messages of care for the elderly and the environment, with a special focus on Lac Ste Anne -- a Catholic pilgrimage site and Indigenous holy site west of Edmonton.
