The Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill this week calling on the federal government to place Canada on its religious freedom watchlist.

The bill, brought forward earlier this year by Republicans in the house, centres around the treatment of Canadian pastors like Tobias Tissen and Artur Pawlowski who were arrested after publicly flouting provincial health orders connected to COVID-19. While the restrictions on church gatherings are no longer in place, the Ohio lawmakers and other Republicans in the U.S. continue their push to add Canada to the religious freedom watchlist alongside countries like Somalia, Russia and Afghanistan, citing a broader pattern of "abuse of religious liberty."
