Missionary nurse killed in Haiti earthquake

ELMIRA, ON—Medical missionary Yvonne Martin, a retired nurse from Elmira, Ontario, was one of the first Canadian victims of the earthquake disaster in Haiti.

Martin and the team of nurses she was travelling with had just landed in Port-au-Prince shortly before the earthquake struck, on a medical mission with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada. The other team members are reported safe.

Martin was a member of the Waterloo Mennonite Brethren Church, that has posted this message on their website:

"It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the death of our dear sister, Yvonne Martin. Yvonne passed away as the result of the earthquake in Haiti, where she had just arrived to do medical mission work for the fourth time.

Please continue to pray for her family, especially her husband, Ron. In unity with them, we are consoled to know that she died doing exactly what she loved to do.

Yvonne's prayer for Haiti was Psalm 72. As a church, we will make this our prayer too."

Lord, have mercy!
