An elderly Catholic cardinal has been arrested in Hong Kong on national security charges, connected to the 2019 anti-government protests.

Cardinal Joseph Zen, now 90 years old, has long been a critic of the Chinese government's control and oppression of religion, and was arrested along with other former trustees of a fund which supports people arrested during the 2019 protests in Hong Kong. The arrests come as China has been cracking down on both religious minorities (which includes Christianity in China) and anti-government attitudes and demonstrations in Hong Kong.
