A new hope—for all ages

I love Star Wars. Or at least I used to, until George Lucas got ahold of it. Recently, the Walt Disney Company announced their purchase of Lucasfilm. The same corporation that owns Mickey Mouse, Marvel (Comics) Entertainment, and Muppet Studios can now add the company that brought you Star Wars and Indiana Jones, to its ever-growing empire. And a new Star Wars movie is currently in the works for 2015.

Almost needless to say, this news was initially met with mostly negative response. Legions of fans have taken to the Internet in voicing their displeasure at the thought of their beloved Star Wars franchise getting the Disney treatment and tarnishing its legacy.

And I'll admit that I shared this frustration—temporarily.

It occurred to me that I couldn't really think of a recent Lucasfilm title that I would recommend watching. In fact, when compared with this summer's The Avengers and last year's The Muppets, the idea of a new Star Wars movie, produced by Disney, actually kind of gave me hope for the future. The idea of someone new taking the helm is one that sits rather comfortably with me, surprisingly enough.

Star Wars reeks of a franchise that's been propped up by nothing more than nostalgia for more than three decades. While many are content to live on the triumphs of yester-year, few seem to be asking the obvious question of "what have you done for me lately?"

I wonder if we often treat the Church the same way.

How often do we prop ourselves up on the nostalgia for years gone by? How much do we really trust a new generation of believers to carry on the legacy of the Church that so many have poured our lives into? And for ChristianWeek, I think that question is equally valid.

I'm not saying that it's time for our longtime readers to step away from our pages—not by a long shot. Your continued support is a testament to us younger folks, many of whom simply haven't had the chance to come across the good news that we continue to share about how God is at work in our nation and around the world—the good news that we try our best to bring you in the pages of ChristianWeek.

We don't recommend that you stop reading us, but we do ask that you share our news with those you care about. Tell your kids about us. Tell your grand-kids about us! Tell them to check us out on Facebook, or Twitter, and see the kinds of stories that have made an impact in your life over the years.

It's not that we're not appreciative for all the time you've spent with us, or that we're looking to appeal to an exclusively younger crowd. But the fact of the matter is we need new readers who will one day take the place of our longtime devotees. And that means introducing the people you care about to ChristianWeek. So please, tell your kids. Tell your grand-kids.
