3 reasons why your church should invest in social media

Jesus said where your heart is, there your treasure will be also (Luke 12:34). And, that means the reverse is also true: where you put your treasure says a lot about where your heart is.

So here are three reasons why your ministry or church should invest some of its treasure into social media.

1. Social media is changing the world

I find that there are two types of people who don’t get this: those who are generally out of touch with how social media is shaping the world, or those who are afraid of how social media is shaping the world.

Social media can be dangerous, but it can and is also a positive force and there is tremendous opportunity for the Church to minister to people around the world. There is no such thing as a “local church” any more. There is only the “sheltered church” or the “social church.”

Which one is yours?

2. Where your money is says a lot about your mission

Social media has become an integral part of people’s lives, and as we all know, most people have messy lives. So investing in social media will say a lot about your church’s desire to help people through the mess of life.

I just heard a pastor talk about how his church used social media to share the story of a woman who had an abortion. She was overcome with guilt and reached out asking if there is any hope, restoration or forgiveness. They shared her story (with permission) on social media to minister to people in similar situations. Their Facebook page exploded with people sharing their story, comforting each other, and discovering forgiveness.

And, there are countless other stories like this I hear all the time.

If your church is driven by the desire to help people through the mess in life, investing in social media is not an option.

3. Investing in social media is an investment in people

Ultimately, when you invest in social media you’re investing in the lives of people. That is the core mission of the Church – of your church.

Jesus’ command to go and make disciples of all nations has never been more relevant because it has never been easier to reach people around the world than right now.

So there are three quick reasons why your church should invest in its social media ministry.
