Earthquake inspires action

Ordinary people do what they can to help in Indonesia

JAVA, INDONESIA—While international aid was quick to come to the Indonesian island of Java following a horrific earthquake at the end of May, those not usually associated with relief and development were swift to get involved as well.

Students attending the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Indonesia (ETSI), a partner ministry of Partners International Canada, were among the first on the scene. The seminary’s main campus is located in Yogyakarta, near where the earthquake was centred.

While there were no deaths or injuries reported at the seminary, Bob Savage, operations manager at Partners’ U.S. office, says students immediately set out to help. read the full story>


Leaders told to invest lives wisely

OTTAWA, ON—A well-known investment and securities strategist had a word of investment advice for his listeners at the annual National Prayer Breakfast on Parliament Hill at the beginning of June.

Tom Caldwell, chair of Toronto-based Caldwell Financial Ltd., told more than 500 politicians, diplomats and other leaders to seriously consider investing in a personal commitment to Jesus Christ.

B.C.’s “bubble-zone” court battle
set to resume

VANCOUVER, BC—Pro-lifers will be heading back to court this fall to challenge as unconstitutional the province’s 10-year-old “bubble-zone” law barring them from protesting in front of abortion clinics.

An earlier attempt to strike down the Access to Abortion Services Act failed when the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear the case. This time, the defendants are pinning their hopes on a more focused argument.

Camp mentor felled by stroke

MISSISSAUGA, ON—Yvonne McCallum, a longtime supporter of Christian camping in Canada, died suddenly of a stroke May 8.

McCallum, 61, served as board chair for Christian Camping International (CCI) Canada from 2002 to 2005. Prior to that time, she worked on the Ontario regional committee and the board executive. She was chair of CCI Canada’s national conference committee at the time of her death.

Thousands join world in prayer

CALGARY, AB—A smaller than expected gathering linked via satellite with 220 million people world wide June 4 at the Saddledome, joining hearts, hands and voices at the second annual Global Day of Prayer (GDOP).

Calgary was just one of several cities across the nation to host the two-hour service that featured songs, messages from local leaders and video images of other Christians in 218 countries world wide, praying simultaneously across every time zone on the planet.

However, organizers say attendance suffered because the 2005 GDOP was very long and somewhat disorganized. Last year an estimated 11,000 attended the event, but this year initial reports estimated several thousand less.
