Rating your board

Using an even-numbered scale (to avoid fence-sitting) of four, six, eight or preferably, 10, you can rate several dimensions of your board to determine its effectiveness, including:
• clear understanding of the board’s role and responsibilities;
• effectiveness;
• passion for the church’s mandate;
• commitment to the tasks or challenges before them;
• compelling and effective meetings;
• clear and specific resolutions;
• clear action items;
• closeness of relationships among members;
• freedom to challenge plans and approaches;
• united support of board decisions outside the meeting;
• punctuality;
• preparedness of members for each meeting;
• quality of agendas;
• length and frequency of meetings;
• level of spirituality;
• training of members;
• giftedness of members;
• communication with the congregation;
• felt degree of micro-managing staff.
