EDMONTONBiologists,
chemists, planners, lawyers, and other Christian
environmental professionals and students came together at
The Kings University College (TKUC) for a first
international conference, Caring for Creation: Faith and
the Environmental Professional. The May 22-24 conference
was sponsored by the college, the American Scientific
Affiliation, and AGRA Earth and Environmental Ltd.
At a public meeting
to open the conference, keynote speaker Calvin DeWitt
kicked off the eventand his shoes(!)as he
outlined a biblical basis for Christian stewardship of
the earth. DeWitt is professor of Environmental Studies,
University of Wisconsin-Madison, director of the Au Sable
Institute of Environmental Studies in Michigan, and
co-author of Earthkeeping in the Nineties.
Stewardship
of creation
Throughout the rest
of the conference, presentations and workshops dealt with
the questions of what it means to be a Christian
environmental professional, and how to integrate faith
and Christian principles on stewardship into areas such
as town planning, wildlife protection, law and policy
making, and climate change.
