Professionals look at environment and faith

Christians talk about integrating faith principles and science

By Wendy Tibbatts Special to ChristianWeek

EDMONTON–Biologists, chemists, planners, lawyers, and other Christian environmental professionals and students came together at The King’s University College (TKUC) for a first international conference, Caring for Creation: Faith and the Environmental Professional. The May 22-24 conference was sponsored by the college, the American Scientific Affiliation, and AGRA Earth and Environmental Ltd.

At a public meeting to open the conference, keynote speaker Calvin DeWitt kicked off the event–and his shoes(!)–as he outlined a biblical basis for Christian stewardship of the earth. DeWitt is professor of Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, director of the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies in Michigan, and co-author of Earthkeeping in the Nineties.

Stewardship of creation

Throughout the rest of the conference, presentations and workshops dealt with the questions of what it means to be a Christian environmental professional, and how to integrate faith and Christian principles on stewardship into areas such as town planning, wildlife protection, law and policy making, and climate change.
