Canadian takes gospel music honorsAbe Zacharias named male vocalist of the yearBy Debra Fieguth - ChristianWeek staff Zacharias, who has released nine albums, has been singing for 30 years. As a teenager, he hoped to make a name for himself in the secular music industry in Nashville. Then he became a Christian, and since that time he has been "singing the praises of God." Zacharias and his wife, Marge, who attend the Salmon Arm Pentecostal Church, have travelled to many parts of Canada to participate in family camps, jamborees, rodeos, stampede breakfasts, fairs, concerts, music festivals and individual churches. A few years ago Zachariass dream of singing in Nashville came true when he performed on the Grand Ole Gospel Show at the Grand Ole Opry. His last two albums were recorded in Nashville, and a song from his latest recording, "Bible In His Hand," was put on a compilation disk which reached the top 50 in the U.S. His song charted at number 20. CGMA is now using the title song from the album, Country Gospel Fever, as its theme song. Earlier in the summer Zacharias won in the male vocalist category for his region (Northwest). That awards ceremony was in Omac, Washington. At the Knoxville event, Zacharias was also honored in three other categories: promoter of the year, along with three others, pioneer award, along with two others, in recognition for long term ministry in Christian music, and song writer of the year, along with eight others. The vocalist award was based not just on musical ability but on stage presence, personality and ministry. "Even though we entertain, ministry is number one," says Zacharias. Now in his 50s, Zacharias has waited a long time for the honor. When his name was announced, he "just sat there with my heart in my mouth," he says. "It just about blew me away. It was awesome."
