Teens make an impact in Halifax

By Andrew Steeves

HALIFAX-More than 420 teens from 32 youth groups in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario participated in Impact '97, a seven-day event of service, learning, worship and fun. Organized by a committee of local youth leaders in conjunction with Canadian Baptist Volunteers (CBV), the event aimed to improve upon the traditional idea of a mission tour by integrating learning with doing.

The week included practical workshops. "On other tours they were just going and doing ministry," explains organizer Mike McDonald. "Now they're doing ministry and they're learning new ministry skills."

McDonald, who is the youth pastor at First United Baptist Church in Truro, Nova Scotia, felt the teens from his church were benefiting from the new approach. They participated in workshops geared towards sports ministry, puppet ministry and working with children.
