Celebrate Lloyd Mackey

On a mid-October evening in Ottawa about 50 colleagues and friends of Lloyd Mackey gathered to celebrate the career and commitment of a man who long ago understood that newspapers have a vital role to play in linking Christians in ministry and purpose.

At the end of this year the veteran Christian journalist is retiring from his position as publisher and editor of ChristianCurrent Ottawa to pursue a variety of teaching and writing interests and opportunities. The Ottawa appreciation event honoured Lloyd for his drive and achievements, and also recognized the patient, sustaining presence of Edna, his wife.

The fact is, no one has done more to advance the development of Christian newspapers than Lloyd Mackey. In this realm he has been a real pioneer; a trailblazer. Some 22 years ago he served as the founding editor of B.C. Christian News (arguably the best Christian community newspaper in North America) and has been involved in the startup of several others, including the Ottawa paper, which is now part of the ChristianCurrent chain.

Back when Lloyd began starting Christian community newspapers, there weren’t any others. Today there are dozens across North America. Although the industry is still relatively young and fragile, it is full of promise and vitality thanks in large part to the dogged commitment of people who caught the vision Lloyd has been tirelessly promoting.

At the “Celebrate Lloyd Mackey” event I read excerpts from letters sent by two of Lloyd’s friends who were unable to attend. Former politician Preston Manning wrote to say how he had enjoyed Lloyd’s friendship over the years, “and particularly appreciated your commitment to keeping the Christian community informed about events and trends in the secular world. You have sincerely attempted, and succeeded, in bringing knowledge and understanding where it did not exist.”

Brian Stiller, president of Tyndale University College and Seminary, also voiced his appreciation for Lloyd’s service to the evangelical community. “I know the personal sacrifice you have made in pursuit of your dream,” he wrote. “Your reputation is strong, your witness clear, your contribution to Christian faith remarkable.”

It was my privilege to host this event on behalf of Fellowship for Print Witness (publishers of ChristianWeek and ChristianCurrent), and to present Lloyd and Edna with a voucher for a trip to Israel this fall. I was especially pleased to be part of a public opportunity to honour Lloyd for the longevity of his vision, the perseverance of his personal commitment and his indomitable spirit.
