Good help

Good help, they say, is hard to find. Perhaps, but then I guess I’ve been uncommonly blessed. I find myself in the enviable position of working alongside good and competent people.

A couple of weeks ago, for example, I made a quick trip to Ontario to spend time with members of the ChristianCurrent team. What a joy! Half a day of meetings with managing editor Robert White was enough to solve some troublesome production issues; a friendly hour over coffee with layout designer Angie Castaldi smoothed several rough spots in our still developing system.

Bringing local, regional and national editorial and advertising content for three publications together in one place and actually producing three similar but unique newspapers is no simple matter. But this brand new team (and the others they work with and depend on) is making it happen month after month. They impressed me first with their willingness to look for solutions to the inevitable problems we encounter, and then with energy they began to implement them. The product and the process are getting better. Go team.

I was also pleased to spend time with publisher David Visser, marketing manager Gus Henne and Fellowship for Print Witness board chair, David Botting. Each once again impressed me with the strength of their vision for Christian publishing in Canada. They are deeply committed to developing publications that address the needs of Christians in our country. And they’re putting in the time and resources it takes to make it happen.

But the editor of a national biweekly newspaper can’t go gallivanting off to meetings around the country if the home front is not secured. No worries. While I was gone, editorial assistant Carla Friesen took it upon herself to improve the calendar section on our Web site. Check out the new Happenings. It is now organized by regions as well as by chronology—and it contains many more events than we are able to put into the print edition of the paper. I love it when things like this happen.

I don’t have room to mention every member of the ChristianWeek team in this space, but you can see their names on the masthead on page two. Each performs a vital role in helping to tell the stories of God and His people in Canada. Good help is all around me.
