Free lecture series encourages deep thinking

OTTERBURNE, MB—A free seven-part lecture series being offered by Providence University College is bringing the expertise of various faculty to the public.

"As faculty, we often discuss the ability for the general public to access higher education online, something which is becoming increasingly common and easy to do," says Nicholas Greco, assistant professor of communications and media and one of the series' presenters.

"Almost everyone has access to the latest TEDtalks or other examples of what some might call 'thinking in public.' But we want to go a step further and make the expertise of our faculty freely available to the public in person.

"We are hoping the lectures will be enriching in multiple ways for those who attend, and will stimulate much discussion. We are there to get people to think about the issues that are presented. There are not always opportunities for the community to engage in civil and enlightened dialogue on issues that are important to society at large."

The lectures will address topics including: "Just Faith: The Christian Call and Response to Social Justice;" "Animals in Biblical Literature: Musings on the Ethical Implications;" "A Call to Reimagine Theological Directives for a Diaspora Church;" "The Process of Postmodern Communication;" "The Birth of the New Testament: Exploring Conspiracy Theories;" Winnipeg: "Living to Consume or Consuming to Live? Consumer Culture and Simpler Living;" Steinbach: "The Effects of Media Violence on Children and Youth: Does Reel Violence Cause Real Violence?" and "A Christian View of Economic Globalization."

The event takes place between February 2 and March 19 at McNally Robinson Bookstore in Winnipeg and the Eastman Education Centre in Steinbach. For complete times and details, visit www.providenceuc.ca. Audio of the lectures, as well as accompanying slides, will be available online a week after the presentation.
