Change a life

An out-of-the-blue phone call from Doug Koop changed my life forever.

I was a 24-year-old reporter, fresh out of journalism school and working my first real job at a weekly newspaper in Leduc, Alberta. It was the continuation of a placement that had been a credit requirement for school—they liked me and kept me on. I completely forgot about the other resumes I had fired off months prior.

But Doug didn't forget about my resume. In fact, he kept the one I sent to ChristianWeek on file, and when a staff writer position opened up in November 2000, he called me. If I was interested, they'd fly in me to Winnipeg for an interview.

Wow. Way to get my attention.

Single and ready for a bit of adventure, I went. Long story short, I got the job and moved to Winnipeg. I found myself ensconced in a tiny closet of a room with a filing cabinet and a computer, churning out news and features about the Church and its people.

Little did I know that one year later I'd find myself in the managing editor's chair, charged with overseeing the daily operation of ChristianWeek. Steep learning curve. But worth it. And that's where I've been (more or less, with a few breaks and title changes) over the last 10 years.

A decade is a long time to stay with one employer. But it's far from the same job, or even the same paper from when I began. It doesn't even look the same, evolving from a broadsheet to a tabloid and now to our magazine-style format and growing online presence.

What hasn't changed is ChristianWeek's commitment to telling the stories of God and His people in Canada (and beyond). There are so many people doing amazing things to further God's Kingdom here on Earth. It's a privilege to write about them.

Doug reached out to me in good faith all those years ago. It changed my life. And now I'm asking…will you also reach out in good faith to support ChristianWeek?

We're grateful for the past decade and excited to see where the next will take us. But we can't do it alone. We need a good team—and you're part of that—to help us along the way. To pray, to encourage, to give.

You never know what kind of impact one phone call, one e-mail or one donation may make. Will you be a part of that today?
